Regatta Solutions INC, Capstone Turbine Corporation’s west coast distributor, partnered with Energy Systems Development to satisfy the electrical and thermal demands of the pharmaceutical facility in Northern California. The Capstone C1000 microturbines operate in dual mode, meaning they can run in parallel with or separate from the electric utility grid. This ensures the facility has secure and reliable power even during grid outages with no operational downtime. Dual mode operation also provides the benefit of peak shaving, which reduces utility costs during peak hours. Additionally, the exhaust from the microturbines will be captured to provide steam and hot water to the entire facility, raising the overall efficiency of the combined heat and power system to almost 90%.

“It was a pleasure working with the Energy Systems Development team on this opportunity. This project is another example of smart power application of Capstone’s product offering in delivering high energy availability and operationally efficient energy solutions to manufacturers,” said Steven Acevedo, President and CEO of Regatta Solutions.

Energy Systems Development, an engineering, procurement, construction and maintenance company based in Northern California, has been developing the site, which is planned for commissioning in March 2014, for three years. When the need for an energy solution that could provide secure power separate from the grid and reduce operational costs during peak hours arose, Capstone microturbines were the clear choice. According to Stu Chang, President and CEO of Energy Systems Development, “I think that our engineering team, with help from a real world integrator like Regatta Solutions, has created a blueprint for the future of cogeneration. No longer do you have to make a choice between stand alone or grid connect, you can have it all.” Capstone microturbines, in combination with Energy Systems Development’s cutting edge design of heat recovery units and rotary UPSs, create a truly mission critical power plant that enhances facility operations and cuts utility costs.
