Capstone to Upgrade Plastics Manufacturing Plant in El Salvador With Microturbine Power

CHATSWORTH, Calif., March 23, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Capstone Turbine Corporation (www.capstoneturbine.com) (Nasdaq:CPST), the world’s leading clean technology manufacturer of microturbine energy systems, announced today that it has secured an order to upgrade the Salvaplastic manufacturing plant in San Salvador, El Salvador.

This will serve as Capstone’s first project in El Salvador with hopes that it will encourage the development of future projects there. El Salvador is experiencing significant growth in its manufacturing sector despite a decline in the number of manufacturing plants that import and assemble components for export, also known as maquiladoras.

Senerco-Enertiva, Capstone’s distributor in Central America, secured the order, which is expected to be commissioned in August 2015.
A propane-fueled Capstone C200 microturbine will be installed in a grid connect configuration to provide electricity to the manufacturing facility in parallel with the local utility. The microturbine will be deployed in a combined cooling and power application which includes a direct exhaust absorption chiller for cold water production. In addition, the quiet operation and compact footprint of the microturbine will allow for a fast and easy installation, keeping capital costs low and ensuring rapid payback.

Salvaplastic is a quality plastics manufacturer committed to continuous improvement as well as being environmentally friendly in its manufacturing processes. Salvaplastic opted for a clean-and-green Capstone microturbine over reciprocating engine alternatives to reduce the overall cost of operation by improving efficiency. The cogeneration system will require minimal maintenance by the end user and won’t require any oil or lubricants for operation.

Hotel Nikko Boosts Green Initiatives with Capstone Microturbine Cogeneration Power System

(San Francisco, CA)—February 23, 2015—Hotel Nikko San Francisco recently installed two Capstone C65 (65kW) microturbines to increase energy efficiency by simultaneously generating electricity for the building’s power and thermal energy for the hotel’s hot water supply. Known as Combined Heat and Power (CHP), or cogeneration, the exhaust heat captured from the microturbines is transferred to heat exchangers to be converted into thermal energy for hot water production.

The two low-emission, natural gas powered microturbines will generate over 1,000,000 kWh of electricity annually plus up to 830,000 BTU/hour for the building’s hot water needs. The microturbines are grid connected and California Air Resources Board (CARB) certified. The system provides energy and hot water for the 25 story, 532-room hotel which features luxury suites, abundant meeting space, restaurants, a 140-seat entertainment venue, indoor swimming pool, and a fitness center.

The cogeneration system was sold and commissioned by Regatta Solutions, Inc. of San Juan Capistrano, CA. Regatta Solutions is the West Coast distributor of Capstone Turbine. Mark Hauenstein of Technical Designs, Engineer and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Project Administrator, provided project management for Takenaka Corporation (U.S.A.), the general contractor for the property. Installation was provided by Accu Temp Air.

As a nine-time EPA Energy Star Award Winner, Hotel Nikko maintains a long list of green initiatives that include water conservation, recycling, and composting. The cogeneration system allows Hotel Nikko to achieve several additional goals beyond reducing energy costs. With Capstone microturbines, the hotel can now maximize operational efficiency, as CHP requires less fuel to produce a given energy output. Producing power on-site also avoids transmission and distribution losses associated with traditional power generation. As a result of burning less fuel to produce each unit of energy, the CHP system will reduce both air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. From a facilities standpoint, the microturbine system minimizes risk and decreases exposure to utility rate increases.

“The microturbine performance is part of Hotel Nikko’s overall strategy to reduce both our energy usage and carbon footprint,” noted Mr. Hauenstein.

The Capstone C65 microturbine is a UL2200/UL1741 approved package with integrated turbine and power electronics that uses natural gas to produce electricity and low emission, usable exhaust heat. The microturbine uses this fuel to produce electricity in parallel with the utility grid as supplemental higher efficiency power. Integrated Combined Heat and Power (ICHP) modules connected atop the microturbine units capture exhaust heat and convert the thermal energy to produce hot water. Heat Exchanger controls maintain the required outlet water temperature.

Energy Efficiency and Infrastructure Upgrades: A New Financing Approach

One of the main barriers for businesses to implement CHP energy efficiency projects is the scarcity of capital. Often projects with all but the shortest of returns are delayed. This blog post introduces an exciting new financing approach which eliminates the need for capex budget and can immediately improve net operating income (NOI). The Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) program is now fully operational in California and available for cogeneration projects. PACE leverages the property equity and provides up to 20-year financing for the upgrades through an assessment on the property taxes.

Highlights of PACE Financing

  • Financing is secured against the property valuation and not the business.
  • Zero cash down, Terms up to 20 years. No corporate guarantees.
  • Off-balance sheet. Immediate benefit to Net Operating Income (profitability)

The long term of the PACE financing lowers the semi-annual payments such that the energy cost savings and incentives realized from the upgrade projects can often turn the projects cash flow positive. In addition, the PACE bonds are off-balance sheet and are transferable when a property is sold.

Using PACE for Cogeneration

For cogeneration applications, we size the system to the consumption of gas per year. We recently reviewed a case in which the customer was using a gas boiler to heat a large swimming pool year round. The energy costs savings using a 65kWp cogeneration system were:

  • Savings
    • Electrical Savings: $36,400/year
    • Heat Savings: $45,700/year
  • Costs
    • Cogen system running costs: $53,500/year
    • Annual PACE payment: $25,800/year.

After the SGIP rebates and various tax deductions, the project is cash flow positive every year and saves over $60,000 in year one for a total of $450,000 of savings in ten years.

The PACE program has been in development across the nation for several years and is now established in California. Approximately $100 million of commercial PACE deals have been financed in the US in 2014 and we expect over $300 million of commercial PACE deals in 2015. K2 Capital is developing a number of cogeneration projects and actively working with Regatta Solutions, Capstone Turbine’s West Coast Distributor. With 20 year PACE financing, the projects are cash flow positive every year – immediately improving net operating income.

PACE is available for a large range of improvements in addition to cogeneration, including LED lighting, HVAC and controls, cool roofs, elevators and windows, as well as solar PV and solar thermal technologies, EV charging stations and building control systems.

Yesterday in Sacramento, legislators and advocates convened to give clarity and attention to the economic and environmental benefits of CHP.  This effort is part of the California Clean Distributed Generation Coalition (CCDC) focused on educating policy makers on the benefits of CHP including: energy efficiency, affordability, reduction of green house gas emissions (GHG), high power reliability and secure power.

Regatta Solutions urged lawmakers to take action by eliminating hurdles that CHP providers and technology distributors face in delivering solutions to clients and customers. These actions include: elimination of departing load charges, changes making standby charges equitable across competing technologies, recognition of CHP value to the grid and Cap & Trade.

Lawmakers like Assembly member, Nancy Skinner, provided encouragement of progress by expressing an understanding and enthusiasm towards this type of clean and green smart power solution.  Assembly Member Skinner’s leadership should be applauded, specifically her introduction to save the SGIP (Self Generation Incentive Program) through the introduction of AB1499. This Assembly Bill will extend the program beyond the previously imposed end date of December 31, 2014.

In summary, there is much work to be done to heighten the awareness of CHP within the energy efficiency market. Regatta Solutions efforts with CCDC are focused on getting the message out that CHP adaptation will improve the competitive positioning of California businesses through lower energy cost and reduction of Green House Gas production.  In addition, prominent discussion and debate must take place by the California legislature on securing the electric grid from cyber penetration before a cataclysmic event occurs.  CHP definitely has a role to play in this key homeland security issue.

Water, Food, Transportation: Where Green Tech Investments Will Go In 2013

Global green tech investments tumbled in 2012, but a few sectors, such as water and agriculture, attracted a greater interest from investors than the year before, according to market data released by the Cleantech Group on Thursday.

Venture capital investments totaled $6.45 billion worldwide last year, down 33% from 2011. Solar deals accounted for only 11.8% of the investments in 2012, compared with 60% in 2011. It’s not surprising to see this big change in investor attitude. The 2011 bankruptcy of Solyndra, which had raised over $1 billion in private capital, highlighted the reality that solar investments over the previous half a dozen years had yet to make money for many investors. Plus, the big imbalance of supply and demand for solar panels over the past two years prompted factory closures and bankruptcies, and many more manufacturers are sure to disappear over the next three years.

Biofuel and green chemical companies drew 14.8% of the investments in 2012, while transportation took in 14.4% and energy efficiency accounted for 14.1%. Most of the sectors tracked by the Cleantech Group saw fewer deals in 2012 than in 2011. Only three sectors saw an increase in the deal count: biofuel, water/wastewater and agriculture/forestry. Investors are warming up to technology that promises to produce healthier crop efficiently and promote local consumption, given the challenge of managing the existing land, water and other resources to feed a growing population worldwide.

“The world of agriculture hasn’t benefited from the IT revolution, and there is a whole host of companies that are making ag more efficient, healthier, more local and better eating,” said Sheeraz Haji, CEO of Cleantech Group, during a conference call with reporters Thursday.

The inclusion of food production also points to a broadening of the definition of green tech, which in the past referred more narrowly to technologies such as those for renewable electricity and biofuel production, electric car development and new materials and services that help consumers and businesses use energy more efficiently.

A new crop of startups that use sensors, the web and mobile apps in order to offer rentals of cars, scooters and private residences also have become part of the green tech world. These companies promote a more efficient use of resources by, say, renting out people’s cars that would otherwise go unused for hours during the day. Those who rent the cars, in turn, wouldn’t need to buy their own.

For 2013, Haji expects to see strong investor interest in five areas:

1. Water: The price of water is set to go up. Businesses are paying more attention to whether they us water efficiently and how much they pay for: T it.

2. Clean web: Software and data analysis — coupled with the use of mobile apps — will nurture new ways to manage resources, from electricity to transportation. Renting out cars and homes falls in this category. Haji called out Streetline, a startup whose sensors and software help drivers find parking spots.

3. Oil and gas: Yes, the fossil fuel industry isn’t going away soon, and it’s keenly interested in managing its operations, such as its water and electricity consumption, more efficiently. In fact, some solar technology companies are finding customers in oil companies that need cheaper steam for get more oil out of their wells.

4. Waste-to-energy: Turning garbage or agricultural wastes into products such as electricity, transportation fuels and industrial sugar (for making plastic), already has attracted a good amount of venture capital. Trash collection giant Waste Management has invested in many companies in this space.

5. Agriculture and food: Using technology to improve farming is getting a lot of investor interest partly because of the growing, worldwide demand for food and because crop production hasn’t been a fertile ground for tech innovation. Using sensors to check soil and nutrient levels and software to analyze those data are examples of how technology could help.
