Capstone to Provide 1MW Microturbine for CCHP at Top-Ranked Pennsylvania College

CHATSWORTH, Calif., Sept. 11, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Capstone Turbine Corporation (www.capstoneturbine.com) (Nasdaq:CPST), the world’s leading clean technology manufacturer of microturbine energy systems, announced today that it received an order for a C1000 dual mode Power Package to provide thermal and electrical power at a top-ranked, private Christian college in central Pennsylvania.

E-Finity Distributed Generation, Capstone’s distributor for the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern United States, secured the order, which is expected to be commissioned in summer 2016.

After switching to natural gas due to recent propane shortages in the area, the college needed a clean energy solution that would provide year-round electrical power to the campus center, and heating and cooling to various other campus buildings. Capstone microturbines were chosen for their fuel flexibility, low emissions and quiet operation. The on-site microturbine power plant is part of a long-term clean energy project to help the college reduce its carbon footprint and meet its sustainability initiatives.

The natural gas-fueled C1000 Power Package will be installed in a combined cooling, heat and power (CCHP) application to produce electrical power as well as hot and chilled water. The turbine will operate in dual mode, which allows the customer to operate independently of the grid or with the grid in a load sharing capacity. With energy efficiency levels approaching 80 percent, the college will soon benefit from having lower operating expenses, minimal system maintenance and backup power capabilities.

Capstone Microturbines to Upgrade New York University Research Facility and Bronx Residential Complex

CHATSWORTH, Calif., June 8, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Capstone Turbine Corporation (www.capstoneturbine.com) (Nasdaq:CPST), the world’s leading clean technology manufacturer of microturbine energy systems, announced today that it received two orders for C1000 microturbines for energy efficiency projects in New York City, New York. A single C1000 will be installed at a New York University research and learning facility while a second C1000 will replace the existing generators at the River Park Towers residential complex in the Bronx.

RSP Systems, Capstone’s distributor for New York and Connecticut, secured both orders, which are to be commissioned in early 2016. Both natural-gas-fueled C1000 microturbines will be installed in combined heat and power (CHP) applications in order to provide primary power and hot water to each location. Once commissioned, the microturbine systems will decrease the operating costs for both customers by shrinking demand during peak hours and cutting the overall energy purchased from the grid.

Capstone microturbines were chosen for their low emission profile and for holding the highest net efficiency rate at nearly 80 percent. Capstone is at the forefront of green building technology, ensuring that the New York University research facility and Bronx residential complex remain compliant with all current emissions laws and green building best practices.

Capstone Microturbines to Convert Biogas Into Heat and Power for Irvine Water Recycling Plant

CHATSWORTH, Calif., March 4, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Capstone Turbine Corporation (www.capstoneturbine.com) (Nasdaq:CPST), the world’s leading clean technology manufacturer of microturbine energy systems, announced today that it received an order to upgrade the Irvine Ranch Water District’s Michelson Water Recycling Plant in Irvine, California with five C200 microturbines.

Regatta Solutions Inc., Capstone’s distributor in California, secured the order, which is expected to be commissioned in early 2016. Once commissioned, the microturbines will cleanly and effectively operate on the biogas, or “green waste”, produced on-site from digestion of biosolids.

Capstone microturbines will be installed in a grid connect configuration to provide electricity to the recycling plant in parallel with the local utility. The site will include a biogas conditioning skid to compress the plant’s biogas for use in the microturbine engines. The microturbines are deployed in a combined heat and power (CHP) configuration. The exhaust from the microturbines will be captured using heat exchangers to provide hot water for process heating the plant, thus reducing the need for natural gas and providing the highest system efficiency possible.

The Irvine Ranch Water District serves Central Orange County under the provisions of the State of California Water Code. The district provides high-quality drinking water, reliable wastewater collection and treatment, recycled water programs, and environment-friendly urban runoff treatment.

The Irvine Ranch Water District chose Capstone microturbines over reciprocating engines for their ability to meet local building and air emissions requirements as well as their proven field experience and service support. Capstone microturbines also meet SCAQMD BACT emissions levels that allow for a streamlined air emissions permitting process.

Mission Hills, California: Providence Holy Cross medical Center in Mission Hills steps up as a leader, setting an example by implementing smart microturbine technology in an effort to create a health care, sustainable hospital design, green energy, clean energy, CHPmore sustainable operation within their facility.

Two Capstone C800 Natural Gas fueled microturbines will be installed and used in a CHP (Combined Heat and Power) application to offset the facility’s electric base load in addition to providing steam and hot water, boosting their overall site efficiency.  “The Capstone micro- turbine opportunity that Regatta Solutions developed for our Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, CA  hits the sweet spot of our energy management program:  it lowers operating costs, reduces impacts on community services, and contributes substantially to the Southland’s clean air goals”, said Richard Beam, System Director of Energy Management Services at Providence Health & Services.  Capstone Microturbines do not require lubricants or coolants and have few maintenance intervals, providing the hospital with low fixed operating costs.  In addition to low maintenance of equipment and broad range of benefits, Providence Holy Cross was also able to take advantage of California’s SGIP (Self-Generation Incentive Program), which provides incentives to support existing, new, and emerging distributed energy resources.

This hospital location will be utilizing a CCHP (Combined Cooling Heat and Power) application, offsetting the electric base load while also utilizing the exhaust heat to provide absorption chilling.  This configuration in concert with California’s SGIP incentive reduced the payback period, creating a triple bottom line impact for environmental, social and economic benefits. “Healthcare facilities, such as Hospitals, operate 24 hours per day with continuous demands for electricity as well as hot water, steam, or chilling needs.  MicroTurbine technology makes good sense for facilities managers looking for equipment with low maintenance, high availability, and low emissions characteristics to address their energy needs”, said Mark Gilbreth, CTO at Regatta Solutions. CHP is the simultaneous generation of electricity and useful heat. In 2013 alone, Capstone’s customers avoided emissions of more than 298,000 metric tons, equal to those from the generation of electricity used annually by 40,955 homes. Cogeneration has been around since 1882 thanks to Edison’s relentless experimentation with sockets, fuses, switches, power meters, generators and the conviction that energy efficiency could change the world.
